Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two.

There's something about this scene that gets me every time. The written dialogue is unforgettable and the delivery by Brando is searing.

It's hard to pick a scene from the Godfather because every word Brando uttered in that film was genius. But, here's one I love.

What about you? Any favorites?

  1. I know this may be heresy but I never got into The Godfather all that much. It was a great movie, the acting was great, but it never really stuck with me.

It never captured my attention the way some movies or books have; wanting to see it over and over again.

  2. I've never been a Brando guy, and I'm with Bob. I may have "guys license" revoked, but I never found The Godfather to be as important as the rest of the male species. I liked it, but I never really loved it.

For pure creepiness, Brando in the Island of Dr. Moreau remake was hella good. Ick.

  3. Oh my God, what heresy.

One time I read a thriller novel, you know a whodunit. I forget the name of it, but one of the characters was a type of thug, psychotic killer who always carried a well-worn copy of Mario Puzo's Godfather with him.

I'm not that bad, but with Puzo's book and Coppola's movies, I'm pretty close.

  4. I gotta say, I don't quite see all the hype with Brando. Yeah he's a great actor, but I think his essentric nature, and choice of some VERY bad roles late in his life (Island of Dr. Morrow, I was look warm about "The Score" but I won't lie, he was lousy in that, ect) or the fact that he went from a stunningly handsome man in his early years to a bloated monster in his twilight.

Still I don't know if I can equate him with the screen presence of Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Redford...or even more modern Stars like Edward Norton, and Robert Downey Jr.

His acting career reminds me more of Orson Welles...but without the Epic genious of Welle's writing and directing.

Still I won't lie, for only a few mins of screen time in a film spanning HOURS, his role as Col. Walter Kurtz MADE "Apocalypse Now".

Still I will rush to your defense, Mike. What's WITH these goofballs? Seriously, The Godfather (1&2, Three never existed, anybody who says otherwise is a liar!) are some of the best movies ever made. I'm always amazed at how modern the film still feels today when I watch it.

  5. I love LAST TANGO IN PARIS, but yes, I know how unfeminist it is... Naughty, naughty... but hey, she shoots him in the end, so he is punished rather severely for his sexism, I thought.

I always got this very REAL LIFE vibe from this movie... as if this might be how Brando really was in his personal life. I think it was probably closer to his actual self than any other role he played.

I might use the next trailer on my blog, since the 70s sax music is JUST TOO FABULOUS! (of course, I'll wait until another day, not while the priest story is up!!!)

Since it was X rated, couldn't use much footage, just a lot of sexy stills and the saxophone:

Makes me wanna watch it all over again! He was sexy! (He was also quite sexy in Streetcar, but this is the "older" sexy.) :)

  6. Weerd,

I'm not saying Godfather wasn't a great movie, either of them. It's just not one that I'll watch over and over again.

Now there are some famous quotes from it, awesome scenes that are very memorable but overall it's not that high on my list.

I hesitate to mention Apocalypse Now, but I think that acting was better then Godfather.

  7. I watch Godfather 1&2 back-to-back at LEAST twice a year....of course I watch a LOT of movies, and any movie I consider "Good" I consider "Worth Watching More than Once"

The bottom floor of my house is an Armory, the top floor is a home theater and library.
