Cook County Sheriff's Office Confiscates 200th Gun From Revoked FOID Card Holders This Year

cook county sheriff's office confiscates gun
The 199th and 200th firearms confiscated by the Cook County Sheriff's Office from revoked FOID card holders under a pilot program this year.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday they have confiscated their 200th illegally-owned firearm this year as part of a pilot program targeting gun owners who have had their Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) cards revoked but have failed to relinquish their weapons.
According to a statement from the sheriff's office, officers seized an AA Arms AP Tec-9 near 155th Street and Western Avenue in suburban Harvey Friday afternoon. A Colt .38 Special was also recovered from the scene.
The weapons mark the 199th and 200th guns recovered as part of the program which launched this February. The initiative entails a small team working to seize firearms from those individuals who have lost their gun privileges for a variety of reasons -- including mental illness, a restraining order or violent crime charges or convictions.
The lying gun-rights fanatics call this, simply "gun confiscation."  They claim that poor lawful gun owners guilty of nothing more than failure to renew their expired licenses were having their rights infringed upon.  Poor victim gun owners.
The HuffPo article clearly states the reasons for the seizures. One interesting thing I noticed is there were no bloody shootouts with the persecuted gun owner shouting "molon labe" with his dying breath. I guess that was another empty threat on the part of the macho gun crowd.
What's your opinion?  Please leave a comment.

  1. Why do you keep lying about us? These were people who most of us agree should not be armed. My objections here are limited to the general idea that government should never have a list of guns or gun owners and to the concern that mental health is too vague a thing to leave to government discretion.

Mike, revoked is a term used when the government decides you no longer qualify. So the people who had their weapons taken aren't those that let their permits expire. The challenge is that as California is doing, the list of those prohibited, gets longer and longer.

"Other critics claim such programs could strip gun owners of their weapons for reasons unrelated to firearms, such as convictions for nonviolent offenses like tax evasion, the Wall Street Journal reported."

As I said above, this is already happening in California. Another example is that many states have passed legislation revoking a person's drivers license if they fall too far behind on child support.

    1. In Tennessee, your carry permit will be revoked if you fall behind on child support. I don't think it renders you a prohibited person for ownership, but it does cause you to lose the ability to carry.

    2. That sounds a bit severe to me. You must hate that one.

    3. It's a bit severe in that it's a bit of a non sequitur. Also, I should have said non-payment rather than falling behind. As long as you pay up the arrears or get on and follow the court's payment plan they'll reinstate it.

I said that it was a non sequitur because failing to support your children shows that you're a total douche, but not necessarily that you're dangerous. However, so long as we accept the legitimacy of a permitting system for carry, it seems to be as valid a permit to pull for non-payment as any.

Personally, I'd prefer imprisonment at hard labor to pay off arrears, though before instituting such a system, we probably need to tweak the system a little to make sure that the support payments being demanded are not excessively high as they can be on some occasions.

    4. I agree being a deadbeat on the alimony or child support has nothing do to with gun rights eligibility.

  3. I think it is funny how Mike calls it "confiscation" in the title of the post, but then the first thing he says is that lying gun rights fanatics call this "confiscation".

    1. It's like the word "ban." It can mean two different things.

  4. Mike,

Yes, they are taking guns from people whose cards have been revoked because they have become prohibited persons. But there ARE confirmed news stories of people whose FOID has expired while the renewal was being processed and whose guns are being confiscated. These people are not the ONLY ones losing their guns, but even you gun control freaks should be offended by this happening since it causes backlash against your system. (Unless you see it as a feature, not a bug.)

As for shootouts, here again we have your stupidity in missing the points of the arguments made about such resistance: it's a last resort. These folks still have a mode of redress. They can work in the system to get their guns back once their renewal is processed, etc. Failing all of that, they can move to a more free state. You go on and on about how we're trigger happy, and then you're disappointed when we don't fulfill your expectations.

Just beware, your constant crowing about how much gun owners put up with is not backfiring on you now, but remember in the movies when the bad guy taunts that the good guy won't shoot him--sometimes he's right, and sometimes he dies with a very, Very shocked look on his face. The rest of us don't want to see a civil war where one side feels pushed into a corner and the other has that shocked look on their faces.

    1. I suppose you've never seen the boasting, threatening remarks by gun-rights commenters, here and elsewhere, in which they swore to resist this very event violently. Even the macho madmen called 3%ers would make for about 6 bloody battles over the 200 confiscations. Or is this another one of those statistical anomalies where there were zero 3%ers because the sample was too small?

    2. It could be that--especially since most threepers would have moved out of Cook County, or it could be that you've misunderstood the threepers and miscalculated whether they'd choose to die on this hill.

    3. Yeah, or it could be that you tough-talking gun-rights fanatics are as full of shit as your typical high-school bully.

    4. Could be a lot of things. Let's not push the issue so much that we find out. Mmm-kay?
