MSNBC’s Reid: Opposition to Gun Control is ‘Neo-Confederate’

"The NRA will helicopter in."

  1. Alex Wagner has already declared herself as against the Second Amendment, but why can't these elitists comprehend that rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution supersede state rights?

  2. Ah, yes. Because the Confederacy seceded, any talk of secession must be racist and seeking to re-institute slavery.

Just like the Northern States which repeatedly threatened to secede over the possible addition of slave states and the Mexican War were racists who wanted to preserve slavery.

  3. I thought she was pretty glib. I liked the neo-confederate thing and the NRA helicoptering in.

    1. Within the structure of Federalism there is always a tug of war between the support for centralized authority and the support for distributed state authority.

What makes it so appropriate to call people supporting states rights Neo-Confederates simply because they're a little more on the states' side than the centralization side? And what makes it less appropriate to call the gun controllers in Colorado and other states Neo-Confederates when they cite states rights against the Bill of Rights?

And now for something completely different:
As for the Black Helicopters thing, I find the jokes based on those to be inane. We've been living with acknowledged black helicopters flying around, doing surveillance, and dropping in swat teams for long enough that it seems like a lazy way to make fun of conspiracy theorists--and, in fact, a way that will give them credibility in the eyes of some. Why not come up with a new theory to make fun of rather than harping on an old one that actually came to pass in some ways?

  4. Wow, my first comment was based on the line at the bottom that talked about some county talking about seceding. Once the video loaded and played, WOW. She's not even talking about someone yelling secession. She's just talking about subscribing to the 10th Amendment and to the basic tenants of Federalism as being neo-Confederate.

Words seem to have lost all meaning. Now you just grab something agreed to be BAD--neo-confederatism, racism, insurrectionism, meanness, etc.--slap it on to something you don't like, whether it makes sense in context or not, and that qualifies as a brilliant argument.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The sophists of old shake their heads at you, MSNBC, and even they are ashamed to recognize you as their progeny.
