Big Surprise - Most Gun Owners are White, Male and Conservative

Pew Data

According to recently published data compiled by the Pew Research Center, the majority of Americans who have a gun in their home are white conservative republican males living in rural environments with children under the age of 18.

To examine the demographic and political characteristics of gun owners and their households, Pew reviewed data gathered from 3,243 adults from April 29 to May 27. Of those, 1,196 said they or someone in their household owned a gun, pistol or rifle.

The survey spans the entire continental United States with 34 percent located in the west, 35 percent in the midwest, 38 percent in the south and 27 percent in the northeast, and with that regional differences emerge.

“White southerners are significantly more likely to have a gun at home (47%) than whites in other regions,” explains Rich Morin, senior editor at the Pew Research Center’s social and demographic trends project. “But because blacks disproportionately live in the South and are only half as likely to have a gun at home as whites, the overall rate for the southern region falls to 38%.”

    1. Bigots such as yourself, Jade(troll), come in all repugnant flavours of ideology.

But all seem to come in only one size, both upstairs, and most hilariously, downstairs.

    2. The most telling category is the age breakdown. That's just another reason why the gun-rights movement is doomed.

    3. Mike, younger people have less money and time; I was 30 before I owned my first firearm. The traditional hunting generational pass down is declining, but young people have indicated plans for future gun ownership in greater numbers than the present rate.

    4. 69% with a gender? that means 31% are T or Q? The next gay pride parade may have a rifle drill team!

    5. "...and have small penises." Jade what is the cause of your pathological need to speak of a mans small penis. I was taught at an early age not to be bigoted towards people for having been born differently than myself.Apparently you were not taught the same lesson. Your repeated attempts to bully men by inferring that they are inadequate because they were born with a small penis and are some how compensating for this inferred inadequacy by exercising their constitutional rights is not only childish and bigoted but also ignorant. What other bigoted views towards others who do not conform to your ideal do you hold?

    6. Anon: There's no attempt at bullying here. I'm merely pointing out the fact that gunloons suffer from arrested development and *need* guns to compensate for their insecurities.

As I've sagely noted many times, gunloons mistake guns as respect. They don't recognize respect is earned; they believe owning an arsenal of weapons makes them somehow worthy.

    7. MBIAC, you're such a rabid gun-rights fanatic that anything we say prompts a knee-jerk NRA-sanctioned response from you. So incapable of thinking for yourself are you, that you missed entirely the fact that when we talk of small penises it's a metaphor for your "arrested development," as Jadegold so perfectly put it. It's not literal, it's metaphorical.

    8. Jade(troll),

Secretly bigoted public officials will respect the rights of mankind as legally defined by the Constitution and the U.N. charter, or you may find yourself comparing sizes with "bubba", in a prison cell.

    9. "MBIAC, you're such a rabid gun-rights fanatic" thanks Mike i appreciate the complement. Literal or metaphorical makes no difference it shows the sickness which has overtaken so many of you America haters.

    10. That's a mighty big leap from mocking you to hating America. The fact is you're the America hater. You place your convenience about gun accessibility ahead of unnecessary deaths.

  2. Sorry Alvin, only 32% of people between 18-25 own a gun and that decision is a decision based on principle, not lack of funds. That's not a good sign for pro gun in the future.

    Unsupported by the facts.

As we've pointed out, gun ownership in the US has been declining for nearly 4 decades.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/us/rate-of-gun-ownership-is-down-survey-shows.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

    From the article:

"Age groups presented another twist. While household ownership of guns among elderly Americans remained virtually unchanged from the 1970s to this decade at about 43 percent, ownership among young Americans plummeted. Household gun ownership among Americans under the age of 30 fell to 23 percent this decade from 47 percent in the 1970s. The survey showed a similar decline for Americans ages 30 to 44. "

    1. On top of the inexorable attrition that is depleting the ranks year by year, every year there are hundreds of thousands of people directly affected by gun violence. The mothers, fathers, siblings of those shot and killed, by and large, move in our direction and away from the gun idolatry which the fanatics preach. Your ranks are dwindling and your movement is doomed.

    2. The vast expanse of rural America has been and will continue to be grossly over-represented in national policy. Incidentally, it also holds one of the most heavily armed civilian populations in the world.

If the gun rights movement is threatened nationally, then we will push through a Constitutional Amendment precluding almost all forms of arms control from public law, and making such immune to abject or substantive dilution by judicial review. We have the power to achieve this now.

      "F.O. is delusional."

Says the man who thinks he can disarm America.

What would you want to occur if certain individuals or communities refuse to disarm or refrain from trade in arms? Would you like to see the public forcefully robbed to appropriate funding for an armed mob to forcefully disarm otherwise peaceful individuals who may not comply with a law crafted to deprive them of their property?

Do you suggest the personal and private interests of individuals be subjugated to a collective order, as defined by such an inherently autocratic and despotic regime as the U.S. Federal Government?

    6. Where did you ever get that I want to "disarm America?" Are you new around here and simply resorting to the traditional NRA-approved line that we gun control advocates want to take away all your guns? My version of proper gun control would disarm about half of you gun owners.

    7. "Where did you ever get that I want to "disarm America?" Your right mike because you would only immediately disarm half of the gun owners in the US and they other half you would confiscate anything you deem an assault weapon or any other semi auto firearms or anything you find unacceptable. All of which make you an enemy of the Republic.Your cowardice once again shines through the facade you put forth of "We don't want to disarm you " no one believes your lies and propaganda.

MBIAC..MikeB cowardly supports the rights of some and not others.

    8. You're right about one thing, I support gun rights only for those who are qualified to exercise those rights safely. If you misuse a gun in any way, you lose those rights. Unfortunately, this wouldn't result in "immediately" disarming half the gun owners. It would take some years, but eventually, given proper gun control laws, it would be found that about half of you guys would not qualify. And many lives would be saved each year.

  4. One thing that young people do not lack is funds. With the median household income in the U.S. floating somewhere between 70k and 80k. Most prosperous young white kids don't even bother getting a job until they are out of college. While they are in college, their parents pay for three square a day and board.

The days of a young person working to pay their own way through college are done. There is one helluva lot of money flying around out there.

The truth is, nobody in their right mind would waste valuable funds on a conceit like playing with guns. Americans are stupid, if nothing else. Not unintelligent. Just plain stupid.
